Giffey Finally Gets Some Run

It seems there's always a player that gets a little more run than normal when George Blaney takes over for Jim Calhoun, and it appears that player this season is Niels Giffey.

Although Giffey played nary a second in UConn's Big East-opening win over South Florida on Wednesday, he got 14 minutes of run today and made the most of it with seven points and some effective overall play.

“He probably thought he was going to play (vs. USF) with me coaching, because I’ve always liked Niels, I like his game," Blaney said. "I just didn’t get a chance to get him in the last game. He had a good opportunity tonight. He gave us two 3’s, he gave us two steals, he even gave us a steal that he kicked the ball on that they didn’t call. He had a great box-out on another play and just played very, very well.”

"I was just happy that I had the chance to get involved, without playing down in Florida," the German sophomore said. "I used my minutes (well).”

Giffey had played exactly one total minute in UConn's prior two games and 12 total in the prior four contests. But you're not going to hear him complaining about PT.

"I don’t want to talk about minutes and stuff like that, that’s just not me," he said. "I would not complain about minutes or talk to coach about minutes. If the coaches think I deserve it, then I’ll be happy.”

Still, Giffey admitted he's been a bit disappointed with his playing time recently.

“Sure, because I was working hard over the whole summer. I had a great summer. That injury in the beginning of the season, that really threw me back. Now, I’ve got to just keep on sticking to it and keep working hard. Everybody’s supporting me.”

“I’m always working hard, working on my shots. It’s not always what’s on the court, but it’s what you do after the games, what you do in practice. That gave me a lot of confidence, and I could translate it to the court.”

Giffey figured to get some run today, not only because Blaney likes him but because Roscoe Smith was limited to just four minutes with a sprained wrist. DeAndre Daniels got the start and did some nice things with six points, three assists and decent defense on Red Storm leading scorer Moe Harkless.

Giffey also helped tag-team on Harkless.

“I think he’s a good matchup for me," he said. "I think he’s a harder matchup for some of the bigger guys.”

Giffey has another supporter in Shabazz Napier.

“Niels played well, which is a great deal for us, because we’ve got to fill that 3-spot," Napier said. "DeAndre, Roscoe and Niels, we’re tyring to figure out which one’s better to fit our offense. They’re all great players, but we’ve got to find out that one player. I think Niels got in there and played well.”

*** Napier's favorite baseball player must be Roy Halladay.

"A complete game is the best game for me," he said.

That's why he wasn't overly happy with UConn's 83-69 win over St. John's.

"I’m picky about how good we can play," Napier said. "If we had played 40 minutes straight and won by 25, I’d have been happy. But we played about 32 minutes good and eight minutes terrible."

One thing not lacking in UConn's game was the alley-oop. Napier connected with Andre Drummond for three dunks on lobs that no one else in the building (or the country) could have caught.

“The alley-oop is very important," Napier said. "It not only gets your team going, but it gets your crowd going. That sixth man, the crowd – that’s no joke. That gets you hyped. It gets you that second wind you’ve been dying for. It makes you want to work and work harder.”

Said Drummond: “We noticed in their zone, they put their shortest guy in the back, that’s going to be good for us. Me and Alex, they just throw the ball up, we’re going to get it, because that’s a 6-3 dude guarding a 6-10 and 6-9 power forward. There’s not much they can really do about that.”

Blaney was disappointed Drummond only had three alley-oop dunks.

“I would like to see them do it about 15 more times. I would like to see Andre get in position to do it about 15 more times. He’s still learning how to get in position. We’re trying to teach him how to offensive box out. That’s what he needs to do a little bit more, because he is so effortless about how he can rise up and catch it. He catches everything, he doesn’t miss anything when his hands are around it.”

*** Drummond's New Year's Eve plans? "Sleep."

That's all I've got for now.

Happy New Year, everyone!!!

Beat It, Phil

Greetings from the XL Center, for today's St. John's-UConn battle.

First things first: Today marks the last day on the beat for Phil Chardis. Phil has been at the J-I for 39 years and been on the UConn beat for about 30. He's traveled from Hawaii to Israel to Morgantown, W.V. covering the team, and has done an excellent job. No one on the beat saw the in-game nuances of basketball better than Phil.

Now, he's going over to the dark side: Phil's taking over for Kyle Muncy as UConn's men's basketball sports information director. His knowledge of what the media wants and needs and his unique, close relationship with Jim Calhoun will surely help him excel in this venture (though we're a little worried about the first couple of times he runs a conference call).

More good news: taking over for Phil as the J-I's beat guy will be Neill Ostrout, the former Connecticut Post beat man. Neill's as solid as they get, and it'll be great to see him back on the beat, starting next week.

• ... improve to 6-1 at home this season.
• ... avoid its first two-hame home losing streak since 2009-10.
• ... defeat the Big Red for the second straight year and improve to 24-23 all-time against them.

• ... in its 26th game of 2011, which would be a new school record (Bucknell also won 25 games in the 2005 calendar year.

Headlines
• After seeing its 18-game home winning streak come to an end on Wednesday in a 72-67 loss to Loyola, Bucknell looks to get a new streak started on Saturday against 4-7 Cornell.
• The Bison welcome back an old friend to Sojka Pavilion, as Bucknell Hall-of-Famer Bill Courtney ‘92 is in his second year as head coach at Cornell. At Bucknell, Courtney was a two-year co-captain, and his 1,499 career points rank No. 8 on the school’s all-time list. His 619 points in 1990-91 is a Bucknell single-season record, and his 14.6 career scoring average ranks 10th all-time. He is also still the school record-holder for career free throws made (400). Courtney was inducted into the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
Mike Muscala reached 1,000 career points against Loyola on Wednesday. He is the 34th member of Bucknell’s 1,000-point club; the 17th in program history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds; and the third Bison with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 blocked shots.
• Muscala has surged ahead in the Bucknell team scoring race. After back-to-back 20-point games against Boston University and Loyola, Muscala is now averaging 14.4 points per game, sixth-best in the Patriot League. Cameron Ayers (12.6), Joe Willman (11.3) and Bryson Johnson (9.8) are not far behind.
• Muscala continues to lead the Bison in rebounding (9.1) and blocked shots (1.6). He leads the Patriot League in rebounding by a wide margin, and he has six double-doubles this season, including a 20-point, 11-rebound performance at Boston University last week.
• The Bison were unanimously picked as the preseason favorite in the Patriot League by the league’s head coaches and SIDs.
• The Bison returned four starters from last year’s team that finished 25-9 overall and 13-1 in the Patriot League. Bucknell went on to capture the Patriot League Tournament title, but the 14th-seeded Bison were ousted by red-hot Connecticut, the eventual national champions, in their NCAA Tournament opener.
• Cornell comes in with a 4-7 overall record, 4-1 at home and 0-6 on the road. The Big Red have dropped three straight — all close losses on the road — to Illinois (64-60), Penn State (74-67) and Stony Brook (68-59 in OT). Cornell has played two Patriot League teams already, defeating Lehigh 81-79 in overtime and falling to American 65-63. Long-range specialist Drew Ferry (45-101 3FG) leads the team in scoring at 14.6 ppg.

Bucknell vs. Cornell
• The “Battle of the ‘Nells” has been tightly contested through the years, with the series tied at 23 wins apiece. The series dates all the way back to Cornell’s second year as a varsity program in 1899-1900, when Bucknell won 29-10 in Lewisburg (Bucknell also defeated a group of Cornell students two years earlier in 1898).
• The two teams have met every season since 1987-88, and during that current uninterrupted stretch Bucknell is 16-8 against the Big Red, including 10-2 at home.
• Last season in Ithaca, the Bison pulled away in the second half for a 75-64 victory behind 20 points and nine rebounds from Mike Muscala. Bryan Cohen had one of his best games of the season with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Joe Willman added 15 points and nine rebounds. Bucknell fought off a number of Cornell rallies but allowed only one field goal in the last four minutes to take control of a close game. Errick Peck led the Big Red with 21 points, while Max Groebe hit five 3-pointers and scored 15.
• The most recent game at Sojka Pavilion was a classic, with Cornell prevailing 104-98 in overtime in 2009-10. Five Bison scored in double figures, led by Darryl Shazier with 22 and then-freshman Muscala with 20 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. Shazier’s buzzer-beater at the end of regulation sent the game to overtime, but the veteran Big Red outscored Bucknell 21-14 in extra time. Seven-foot center Jeff Foote had a monster night for Cornell with 28 points and 18 rebounds, while Ryan Wittman added 25 points. Cornell would later go on to the Sweet Sixteen at the NCAA Tournament.

Bucknell vs. The Ivy League
• Bucknell is 42-44 (.488) all-time against the Ivy League. The Bison have played 46 games against Cornell, but only 40 combined against the other seven Ivy teams. In addition to its 23-23 record against Cornell, Bucknell is 4-2 against Yale, 3-1 vs. Brown, 3-4 vs. Penn, 4-10 vs. Princeton, 2-1 vs. Dartmouth, 2-2 vs. Columbia and 1-1 vs. Harvard.
• The Bison are 4-1 against the Ivy League over the last last two seasons. A year ago they defeated Cornell, Columbia and Dartmouth while falling to Princeton. This season Bucknell has a 62-56 win over Princeton, and the Bison will travel to Dartmouth on Jan. 3.

Last Time Out
• Bucknell and Loyola (Md.) engaged in an entertaining affair on Wednesday night at Sojka Pavilion, but the Greyhounds rallied late for a 72-67 win, ending Bucknell’s 18-game home winning streak.
• The loss spoiled a milestone night for Mike Muscala, who scored his 1,000th career point as part of a 24-point, eight-rebound outing.
Bryan Cohen and Cameron Ayers also reached double figures with 11 points each.
• Bucknell led 64-61 with four minutes to play, but Loyola ended the game on an 11-3 run. The Bison had the ball down by two points, but Ayers missed a 3-point attempt with eight seconds left and Loyola iced it at the foul line.
• Muscala went 8-for-12 from the foul line, setting a career high for attempts.
• Bucknell shot 46.0% from the floor, went 4-for-8 from 3-point range and committed only nine turnovers, but the Bison allowed Loyola to shoot 52.9% and were outrebounded 36-25.
• Loyola became the first visiting team to shoot 50% against Bucknell at Sojka Pavilion since Wagner did so last Nov. 29. Not coincidentally, that was also Bucknell’s last home loss.

Stats Worth Noting
• Bucknell is shooting 50.6% as a team in its last five games.
• Even after being outrebounded by Loyola on Wednesday, Bucknell has been dominant on the glass of late. After going -15 in rebound margin against Minnesota and Vanderbilt to start the season, the Bison are +93 since then and have outrebounded every opponent except Syracuse and Loyola. Bucknell’s +5.5 rebound margin for the season is by far the best in the Patriot League.
• A big part of Bucknell’s rebounding success has been limiting opponents’ second chances. The Bison have held 11 of their last 14 foes to eight or fewer offensive rebounds.
• Bucknell did not allow any of its first 11 opponents to shoot 50% from the field, but now each of its last three foes have done so: Syracuse (.528), Boston University (.500) and Loyola (.529).
• Bucknell has been better at the free-throw line of late. After shooting just 68.5% at the line in their first 10 games, the Bison have made 84.6% (66-78) as a team in the last four contests. That includes a 21-for-21 performance in the win over Richmond. Last year Bucknell ranked third in the nation in free-throw shooting last season at 78.8%, and after the slow start the team is up to 73.4% this season.
• Bucknell has gotten a big lift so far from newcomers Brian Fitzpatrick and Steven Kaspar. Fitzpatrick, a junior forward in his first eligible season after transferring from Penn, is 21-for-36 (.583) from the floor and is averaging 4.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 12.2 minutes per game. Kaspar, a freshman point guard, has not scored much yet, but he leads the team and ranks in the top 10 in the Patriot League in both assists (43) and steals (18).
• Eight Bison have had at least one double-digit scoring game this season, and 10 of the 14 on the roster have done it at least once in his career.
• Kaspar’s seven assists against West Alabama were the most by a Bison freshman since Abe Badmus had eight against Navy in 2003-04.
• Johnson’s 15 3-pointers in the wins over West Alabama and Morehead State were a school record for most threes in consecutive games. Bucknell’s 17 treys in the West Alabama game set a school record.

Muscala in Elite Company
• Junior Mike Muscala has joined an elite fraternity of 1,000-point scorers at Bucknell. He is now one of 34 players in school history to reach the century mark and the first since John Griffin went over 1,000 in 2007-08.
• Muscala also became the 17th player in program history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds and the third with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 blocked shots.

What’s Next?
• Bucknell kicks off 2012 with a trip to Hanover, N.H., to face Dartmouth on Tuesday, Jan. 3.
• That will be the final non-conference game of the regular season for Bucknell. Patriot League play begins on Jan. 7 when the Bison travel to Army.

HEAD COACH BILL COURTNEY
Cornell head coach Bill Courtney is in his second season at Cornell (14-25, .359) ... Courtney became the fifth Robert E. Gallagher '44 Coach of Men's Basketball at Cornell on April 23, 2010.

ITHACA, N.Y. — More than halfway through a treacherous five-game road swing, the Cornell men's basketball team will look to pick up its first road win of the 2011-12 campaign when it meets defending Patriot League champion Bucknell on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. at Sojka Pavilion. Barry Leonard will provide the call on HITS 103.3 FM and on RedCast).

After winning consecutive overtime games at home earlier in December, Cornell seemed to be over the hump in learning to win close games. Unfortunately, those troubles have bit back in the last three contests against Big Ten teams Illinois and Penn State, and a Stony Brook picked second in its conference. Cornell lost in the final minute against the nationally ranked Illini, gave up a second half lead to the Nittany Lions and couldn't close out a second half comeback in an overtime loss at Stony Brook. A year after dropping 10 games by five points or more or in overtime, the Big Red has now lost three in the same manner this season.

Wroblewski, a captain and candidate for the Bob Cousy Award, is averaging 8.6 points, 5.7 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game and runs an offense that has six players averaging 6.3 points per game or better. Fellow senior captain Drew Ferry is posting a team-high 14.6 points, while three-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week Shonn Miller is scoring 9.1 ppg. and leads the team in rebounding (6.1 rpg.). Juniors Josh Figini (8.5 ppg.) and Eitan Chemerinski (7.6 ppg.) aren't far from double figures in the post.

Cornell's defense has been solid, allowing opponents to hit just 42 percent from the floor overall and 29 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (making just 5.9 per game). The Big Red paces the Ancient Eight in steals per game (8.6 per game).

ABOUT BUCKNELL
• 2011-12 Record: 8-6 (0-0 Patriot).
• Conference: Patriot League.
• Head Coach: Dave Paulsen (Connecticut '90), 54-55, fourth season at Bucknell; 316-175, 18th season overall.
• Defending Patriot League champion Bucknell was picked to repeat in the 2011-12 preseason poll.
• Bucknell had its 18-game home win streak at Sojka Pavilion in a 72-67 defeat at the hands of Loyola (MD) on Wednesday evening.
• Junior Mike Muscala, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, is averaging a team-high 14.4 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.
• Cameron Ayers (12.6 ppg.) and Joe Willman (11.3 ppg.) are also averaging double figures, while Bryson Johnson is scoring 9.8 points with a team-best 34 3-pointers made.
• The Bison are shooting 46 percent from the floor as a team and 39 percent from beyond the arc. Bucknell is also outrebounding opponents by 5.5 per game.
• Bucknell returns four starters and 10 letter winners from last season's 25-9 squad that was 13-1 in Patriot League competition.
• Fourth-year head coach Dave Paulsen has led the Bison back to prominence quickly, guiding Bucknell to the 2010-11 NCAA tournament and earning conference coach of the year honors. Prior to his stint at Bucknell, Paulsen coached at Williams and St. Lawrence, guiding the Eps to the 2002-03 national title and a runner-up finish the following season.

THE SERIES: The series is tied 23-23 after Bucknell's75-64 victory last season in Ithaca. The two teams had their first meeting in the 1899-1900 season when the Bison won 29-10. The Big Red snapped a five-game losing streak to Bucknell in the series with a 75-64 triumph at home during the 2008-09 season before capturing a thrilling 104-98 overtime victory in 2009-10 in the last meeting in Lewisburg, Pa.

LAST TIME VS. BUCKNELL: Bucknell shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half to overcome a career-high 21-point, eight-rebound effort from Cornell's Errick Peck in a 75-64 Bison victory over the Big Red at Newman Arena. Peck was an efficient 9-of-12 from the floor, continuing his strong play since rejoining the starting lineup. He added eight rebounds, an assist, a steal and an emphatic blocked shot. Max Groebe hit five 3-pointers en route to 15 points, while Chris Wroblewski hit for 12 points with three assists and a pair of rebounds. Cornell turned the ball over just nine times, but couldn't contend with Bucknell's size advantage in the paint. Bucknell controleld the paint in the second half to end the contest with a 37-28 advantage and got 20 points and nine rebounds from Mike Muscala, while Bryan Cohen had a solid floor game with 17 points and eight rebounds. Joe Willman had a breakout game for the Bison with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Darryl Shazier was his steady self at the point in collecting six points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals. Bryson Johnson scored nine points on three 3-pointers and G.W. Boon had eight points off the bench.

CORNELL VS. THE PATRIOT LEAGUE: Cornell is 137-114 all-time against current members of the Patriot League, including 23-23 against Bucknell. The Big Red has also played American (0-1), Army (20-13), Colgate (70-53), Holy Cross (2-3), Lafayette (7-11), Lehigh (13-9) and Navy (2-1).

LOOKING BACK AT THE STONY BROOK GAME: Cornell rallied from a 20-point first half deficit to send the game to overtime, but unforced turnovers and missed free throws doomed the Big Red in a 68-59 loss at Stony Brook at Pritchard Gymnasium. Senior Drew Ferry hit five 3-pointers for his 15 points and Shonn Miller had 10 points and five rebounds to pace the Big Red, which outscored the Sea Wolves 31-16 in the second half to draw even at the end of regulation. Eitan Chemerinski added nine points and Galal Cancer notched eight points and four rebounds. Chris Wroblewski had five points, seven assists, four rebounds and five steals. Cornell shot just 29 percent from beyond the arc, including 2-of-12 from players other than Ferry. Stony Brook was led by Bryan Dougher and Ron Bracey with 16 points apiece, while Tommy Brenton had 12 points and eight rebounds and Dave Coley scored 10 for the home team. The Sea Wolves held a 40-32 edge on the backboards and turned the Big Red over 18 times.

NOTES TO KNOW:
• Cornell is 1-1 already this season against teams expected to finish in the upper half of the Patriot League standings, topping Lehigh in overtime and falling to American by two points.
• The Big Red's last nine games have been decided by single digits, with five of the last six having been decided by four points or less or in overtime.
• Cornell will be without the services of starting point guard Miles Asafo-Adjei for the fourth straight game after the junior suffered an infection to his leg that left him hospitalized in Illinois.
• While Cornell has had good success at home (4-1), it is still in search of its first road victory (0-6).
• Three of Cornell's first 11 games have gone to overtime, with the Big Red going 2-1. It is the ninth time Cornell has played in at least three overtime games in a single season. The school record for OT contests in a year is four, done in 1962-63, 1979-80 and 1999-2000.

CORNELL IN OVERTIME:

• Cornell is 28-15 in home overtime games, 2-2 in neutral contests and 8-27 in road games.
The Big Red is 2-2 all-time against Bucknell in overtime contests. Included was a 104-98 classic during the 2009-10 season the last time the two teams played at Sojka Pavilion.

THE STREAKS:

SHONN MILLER A THREE-TIME IVY LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Nov. 14 — Miller's first varsity appearance was enough to catch the eye of the league after a solid opening effort at St. Bonaventure. Miller connected on all three of his field goals, including a 3-pointer, and added a team-high four rebounds in Cornell's 79-58 loss to the Bonnies. He added a blocked shot and a steal.
Nov. 21 — Miller averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 0.7 steals in just 23.3 minutes per game in helping Cornell go 2-1. He shot 46 percent from the floor and 71 percent from the free-throw line. He reached double figures in two of the three contests. Miller opened the week with career highs of 19 points and eight rebounds to go along with a block and a steal in a win over Binghamton. He eight points and two rebounds against Buffalo and notched 10 points, six rebounds and two blocked two shots against reigning America East champion and preseason favorite Boston University.
Nov. 28 — Miller averaged 8.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals in two games for the Big Red, including earning his first career starts. He had eight points, 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals against an athletic Delaware frontcourt. He answered that performance with nine points, seven rebounds, a block and a steal against American.

GALAL CANCER ALSO AN IVY LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK:
Dec. 19 — Cancer scored 11 points, dished seven assists, snatched five rebounds and picked up four steals in an 85-82 overtime victory over the Great Danes. He made 5-of-10 field goals while collecting career highs in assists and steals. He was also just two points off his career scoring high. Cancer had four points, two rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in the final minute of regulation for the Big Red, who overcame a 10-point deficit with nine minutes to play to force an extra session.

WROBLEWSKI NAMED FINALIST FOR LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Senior guard Chris Wroblewski has been named one of 30 finalists for the Lowe's Senior Class Award it was announced today by the committee. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. He joins Penn's senior guard Zack Rosen as the only Ivy League players on the list. Wroblewski was a third-team Capital One Academic All-American as a junior and has twice been named to the academic all-district team. The two-year team captain has been involved in numerous charitable endeavors and has been a four-year starter on the court. His teams have won two Ivy titles and he is a two-year member of the Bob Cousy Award Watch List as the nation's top point guard. A second-team All-Ivy pick as a junior, he was the conference's leader in steals and was second in assists and assist-to-turnover ratio and sixth in scoring. He has twice led the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage.

TALL IVY: Over the last five seasons, Cornell's 53-17 record is the best among Ivy League teams in conference action. Penn, who claimed the 2006-07 title, is second at 40-30, followed by Yale (39-31), and 2010-11 Ivy champions Harvard (36-34) and Princeton (36-34). Rounding out the field is Columbia (32-38), Brown (29-41) and Dartmouth (16-54).

CORNELL BEYOND THE ARC — 600 AND COUNTING: The Big Red hit seven 3-pointers at Stony Brook on Dec. 28, its 638th consecutive game with a made trey. With five 3-pointers at Seton Hall on Nov. 14, 2010, Cornell extended its streak of games with at least one 3-pointer to 600. The last time Cornell did not hit a 3-pointer was against Denison in the 1988-89 season opener (0-for-2). Since the 3-point shot came into effect in NCAA play during the 1986-87 season, Cornell has hit at least one shot behind the arc in 686 of 690 games, connecting on 4,298 treys, an average of 6.2 per game. Cornell has hit at least 10 3-pointers in a game 33 times in 72 games over the last three years, including an Ivy League single-game record 20 at Brown in 2009-10.

BOMBS AWAY: Cornell made 251 3-pointers in 28 contests during the 2010-11 campaign. The 9.0 3-pointers per game ranked second all-time in a season for the Big Red (behind only the 9.6 per game in 2009-10) and ranked sixth among all Division I teams a season ago. Last season, Cornell ranked first nationally in 3-point percentage (.430) and third in 3-pointers made per game in 2009-10, and ranked in the top 20 nationally in 3-point percentage in 2008-09 (fourth, .411), 2007-08 (fourth, .409) and 2006-07 (18th, .396).

STATING THE STATES: Members of the Cornell basketball team represent 16 states and one Canadian province.

BIG RED CAPTAINS: Cornell's senior backcourt of Drew Ferry and Chris Wroblewski will serve as co-captains for the 2011-12 season. Wroblewski is in his second year as team captain, becoming the 13th player to serve as captain for at least two years.

WHAT WAS LOST: Cornell said goodbye to three seniors last spring, as Mark Coury, Aaron Osgood and Adam Wire closed out their Big Red careers.
• Coury was one of the team's top post players in his two seasons on the court at Cornell, first as a reserve on last year's Sweet 16 squad in 2009-10, and last year as a regular in the rotation. A transfer from the University of Kentucky, Coury's biggest highlight came when he beat the shot clock to hit the game-winning basket with 35 seconds left at the Palestra to help Cornell sweep Penn a year ago.
• A team captain in 2010-11, Osgood was expected to be a major factor in the post, and was when healthy. One of the team's top scorers (7.3 ppg.) and rebounders (4.5 rpg.), Osgood played in 43 career games with eight starts, shooting 52 percent from the floor and averaging 3.0 points and 2.0 rebounds.
• Another team captain, Wire was a four-year letter winner who ranked among the top 20 all-time in steals and field goal percentage in school history. He totaled more that 100 steals and 100 assists and set career highs in scoring, rebounding and assists in his final season.

Napier, Roscoe Banged Up

First off, some injury news to report:

Shabazz Napier sat out the latter part of today's practice as a precaution. He suffered a sprain to his left foot during Wednesday's win at South Florida and it's still nagging at him a bit. However, Napier -- who watched the last half of practice from the sidelines with an ice pack around his left knee -- should be OK for tomorrow's St. John's game, per George Blaney.

The news isn't as good on Roscoe Smith, who sprained his left wrist against USF and has sat out the last two practices. Smith's wrist is still a little swollen, though X-Rays have been inconclusive. He's "day-to-day," according to Blaney.

That could be a tough loss for UConn, as Smith would seem to be a strong candidate to guard St. John's fab frosh Moe Harkless. All Harkless did on Tuesday agianst Providence was go for 32 points and 14 rebounds. His scoring total was the most ever by a freshman in his Big East debut, surpassing a guy named Allen Iverson (1994) and Troy Murphy (1998).

“There’s been a lot of good players who have started in this league who haven’t put those numbers up," Blaney marvelled.

How good is Harkless (whose de-commitment from UConn has been well-chronicled on this blog)?

“I don’t think there’s anything that he doesn’t do,” Blaney said. “He’s big, he can handle, he can shoot it in or out, put it on the floor. And he rebounds – 14 rebounds (against Providence) shows me big-time stuff. Most importantly, he believes in himself.”

Added Andre Drummond, who played against Harkless in high school: “He’s like a Jeremy. He plays effortlessly, he just scores.”

*** UConn boasts significant size and depth advantages over the Johnnies, who have just eight scholarship players and don't dress a player over 6-8, and will make a concerted effort to get the ball down low to Andre Drummond and Alex Oriakhi.

*** St. John’s proved it can run and gun, with 91 points against Providence on Tuesday, but can also slow things down effectively.

“They want to run on your mistakes,” said Blaney, “so we need to take care of the ball and take good shots.”

The Red Storm certainly looked impressive in that win over Providence. But remember, it was Providence.

*** Surprisingly, UConn is looking to start off its Big East slate at 2-0 for the first time since 2003-04. It's also looking to end a two-game losing skid to the Storm, and the losses were ugly: 89-72 last year at MSG, and 73-51 two years ago in the Big East tournament.

Of course, the Johnnies have just one returning scholarship player (backup guard Malik Stith) back from last year's team.

Blaney still sees similarities between last year's St. John's team and this one.

“They play with the same energy," he said. "They’re an exceptionally confident, cocky group. After two wins against us in the last two years, I expect St. John’s to be good.”

*** Blaney said Jim Calhoun is going "berserk" not being able to coach these three games, but said he hasn't had any contact with him. As a matter of fact, he can't, per guidelines of the suspension.

Of course, there's a marked difference between when Blaney runs a practice or game and when Calhoun does.

"We're still running the same style," said Jeremy Lamb. "It's a little different not hearing him on the sidelines."

Blaney did, however, raise his voice a couple of times in practice today over UConn's lethargic defensive play.

Said Drummond: “Coach Blaney’s stepping up really well, he’s doing a great job. I really commend him for taking that position. He’s doing so well with it. A lot of people wouldn’t be able to take that role and do what he’s doing.”

*** Neither head coach will be on the sidelines tomorrow. Steve Lavin will miss his eighth straight game as he recovers from prostate cancer surgery.

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 30 is No. 263 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 182 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 229. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
