Penn St. lost 4 starters and their top 5 scorers from a team that lost to Ohio St. in the Big Ten tourney finals and went to the NCAA losing to Temple. This season the Nittany Lions will be rebuilding with a new coach….Patrick Chambers who at age 39 will be the youngest HC in the Big Ten. Chambers was a former chief assistant coach at Villanova before going to Boston U. as HC for 2 years. Importantly, Chambers, a Philadelphia native, has connections in a recruiting area important to Penn St. Unfortunately for Chambers, he assumes the HC position at Penn St. with a roster mostly lacking in talent and experience. Only junior guard Tim Frazier returns as a starter from last season’s team….Frazier is a capable PG and solid defender. The Nittany Lions backcourt should be helped by returning Sr. Cam Woodyard who has some experience off the bench and freshman Trey Lewis. Returning Soph Billy Oliver has some experience in the frontcourt and redshirt 6’ 9” Serbian Sasa Borovnjak should help on the frontline. Otherwise, the Nittany Lions are hoping that some of the freshmen step up such as 6’8” Ross Travis.

Not much is expected this season from the Nittany Lions in the Big Ten as they are picked to finish last in the conference. Penn St has opened the season with easy victories over Hartford, Radford and Long Island, but the competition will immediately get much tougher as they face #2 Kentucky.

Kentucky is coming off a 75-65 win over #11 Kansas, but coach Cal is clearly not satisfied with the lack of teamwork in the game. The Cats started off a bit nervous and instead of finishing plays and playing as a team, they resorted to too many individual moves and committed a boatload of TO’s in the 1st half…. Teague alone had 6 TO’s in the 1st half.

UK did settle down in 2nd half and played much better opening up a nice lead and held on for a ten point win. The Cats did get some solid performances from Terrence Jones with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist continued his game intensity and contributed 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and 4 assists, but did have 5 TO’s. Anthony Davis had 12 points, but was huge on the defensive end with 6 rebounds and 7 blocks while affecting other shots from the field. Doran Lamb performed well before his family in MSG hitting 3-5 from the perimeter and finished with 17 points. Teague did play better in the 2nd half and didn’t commit a single TO.

Despite the nice win over Kansas, the game revealed that these young Cat have much to work on. 1) They must understand that individual talent alone doesn’t win games….talent playing as a team win games. 2) They must value the ball….19 TO’s is far too many. 3) They must work on their FT shooting…..16-29 (55.2%) is unacceptable. 4) They must continue to work on their help defense 5) Most importantly, this team must listen to Cal….trust each other….and execute offensively as a unit looking for the open man.

Frankly, as someone who has watched UK basketball since the Hagan/Ramsey era and I have seen great UK talent and teams….but, I would be hard pressed to find a past UK team with this much overall talent….the 96 team comes the closet. In fact, the talent on this team is scary good and their potential is unbelievable. But to realize that potential and equal the successes of past UK teams, they must put their individual stats secondary to the success of the team as a whole. If this team plays as a well oiled unit….not caring who scores or gets the glory…I see an 8th NCAA championship banner hanging in Rupp Arena after this season!

I see a UK win over Penn St. by 20 points. GO CATS!
