It will be interesting to see Pat Knight, Bob Knight’s son, bring his Lamar team into Rupp arena….particulary since Bob Knight has essentially hated anything to do with UK going all the way back to Rupp. We all remember Knight making out and out lies regarding last season’s UK basketball team academics and was forced to make a half hearted apology. Pat followed his Dad as coach at Texas Tech and was a failure….it is likely that this might be Pat Knight’s last chance to prove he can be an effective HC.

Pat Knight has inherited a veteran Lamar team….losing only one starter from last year’s team. The Cardinals start 4 seniors and a junior…and substitute other veterans. Lamar is not a tall team, but they are very athletic and quick….and are out rebounding their opponents. The Cards have two of their loses to top 5 opponents in UL and OSU. Lamar is not a great shooting team….40% from the field and 32% from the perimeter…. and that has hurt them in some of their losses. Lamar does have one outstanding 3 point shooter and that is Anthony Miles who has hit 13-25 for 52%. Miles also leads the team in assists with 47. Harper, who is only 6’5” and Deron Lamb only 6’2” lead the team in rebounds averaging 7.4 RPG and 8.7RPG respectively. Lamb also leads in steals with 23.

Lamar can be a very dangerous opponent if they start making shots…..as they bring experience and quickness to the floor. They also can bring in experience and more height off the bench. I watched Lamar play OSU and although OSU had a so so offensive game…they played great defense against Lamar.

UK is hoping to see Terrence Jones back on the floor against Lamar as this is the last game before the Cats big game against UL. There has been a great benefit of Jones injury in that Wiltjer has garnered some very valuable playing time. UK had a solid game against Loyola Md., but except for Wiltjer….the Cats struggled from the perimeter.

We have recently seen teams such as Wagner upset Pittsburgh….Davidson upset Kansas….Indiana St. defeat Vandy…..and a bunch of close games where mid-major teams took ranked teams to the brink. Even UL barely survived College of Charleston and Western Ky. The message is simple….UK must be ready to play with great energy and intensity no matter the name on the opposing jersey. Obviously, UK is more talented than Lamar, but the Cats will be facing a dangerous opponent that will play hard at Rupp arena and Pat Knight would love nothing more than to give his Dad a Holiday present in defeating UK.

The Cats are coming off the Christmas break and hopefully will not be sluggish from celebrating the holiday with their families. I see a UK win over Lamar by at least 15 points.
GO CATS!
