What I Saw vs. Radford!

Returning home after a long road trip and getting a few days rest between games, I was expecting to see a lot of improvement in this game vs. Radford. There was a lot to look at in the game tape from the road trip and I wanted to see that we picked out those negatives and spent the week correcting those issues. Here is what I saw.

Positives:

• Kentucky only attempted 15 three pointers. I have been concerned with the fact that we settle for too many outside jump shots this year, but against Radford we used our length and size and got to the rim more.

• Marquis Teague played more under control. He still made a few mistakes, but this was his best game yet. He was more in control, and ran the offense effectively. 5 assists and only two turnovers.

• 87.5% from the free throw line. 21-24 has to be one of the best free throw shooting displays from a Kentucky team in a long time.

• Kyle Wiltjer again played with more aggression. 8 rebounds in only 22 minutes. He will have to prove he can keep up the aggression against teams like North Carolina, Louisville, and Florida, but he has already come a long way.

• Terrence Jones has improved his perimeter game a lot. Not only is he shooting the three better (1-2 against Radford,) but he just seems more comfortable with the ball on the perimeter. Jones being able to play 15-20 feet from the basket is going to cause match-up nightmares for teams.

• Doron Lamb is improving every game. Lamb is passing on open threes and instead driving to the rim, getting easy buckets and distributing. He is a much improved all around player, and it is getting even better every game. I love the move at the 2:30 mark of the first half, when Lamb passed up the open 3, drove to the basket and pulled up for a 15 footer. That is a play that Doron Lamb did not make last season.

• Anthony Davis is slowly learning the game. After the Marist game, I wrote how Davis was going to have a Harrison Barnes type season. Where he would struggle early then by January it would all come together for him. You are starting to see him come around. He is learning the offense and he is not out of place as often as he was a few weeks ago. By late December-early January, Anthony Davis is going to become one of the top two or three players in the country.

• Rebounding was much improved. We out-rebounded Radford 48-26. That is the kind of rebounding margin we should be posting against teams like this.

• Intensity of the defensive end. When we started the game slow offensively, we continued to play tough defense. When you start slow on the offensive end, it can be easy to get frustrated and let your defense slack, too. I like that even though we struggled early offensively, we kept up the defensive intensity.

• Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s rebounding ability. Getting rebounds from a wing player like Kidd-Gilchrist can help push the pace. If we can push the pace, it gives us an instant advantage over anyone we play.

• 10 blocked shots, 4 from Anthony Davis. Davis is going to demolish the UK single season record of 83. He already has 22 blocks in five games. Davis is on pace to block 136 shots in the regular season alone.

• We continue to have a balanced scoring attack. Terrence Jones led the way with 17, followed by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist with 15, Marquis Teague with 13, Anthony Davis with 12, Doron Lamb with 10, Kyle Wiltjer with 9 and Darius Miller with 6. We have 7 guys who are capable of leading the team in scoring every game.

• Kyle Wiltjer’s low post defense. It is well documented how polished and fundamental Wiltjer’s offensive game is, but I was impressed by how well he played defensively. He moved his feet, used his body, and did not leave his feet on defense in the low post.

• Marquis Teague’s jump shot. This was supposed to be one of his weaknesses coming out of high school. I do not see why, because he looks to be a very good jump shooter.

• John Calipari’s coaching. I like that Calipari used this game to work on playing a zone. If a zone is something we might use this year, it is always a good idea to get some real game experience playing it.

Negatives:

• Darius Miller is still not aggressive at all. Miller is just as talented as anyone else on the court but he does not have the killer instinct. As a senior who has started in a Final Four game, he needs to be more aggressive.

• Although Teague played much better, he is still driving too deep into the defense. Personally I think this is just a case of him adjusting to the speed of the game. With players bigger, stronger, and faster on the college level than in high school, it takes some time to adjust to the speed of the game. He seems to just a split second too late on his decisions with the basketball right now. He will come around though.

• Terrence Jones still plays soft at times. We see spurts of Jones dominating weaker opponents and being physical, but he still loses that intensity sometimes. If Jones always played with intensity, he would be a dominate force in college basketball.

• Only 11 assists on 31 field goals. Too much one on one basketball was played. On 31 field goals with as many different play makers we have, I would like to see the assist number be around 16-17.

• 16 turnovers. We are going to turn the ball over because of the pace we play at. But this number needs to be around 9 or 10.

Overall I was very pleased with this performance. This game showed that we worked a lot on things that we were struggling with. Marquis Teague showed more patience, Anthony Davis is learning, etc. This game showed that Calipari really focused on our weaknesses after returning from our road trip. This team is getting better every game. If they keep improving at this rate, they will be hard to beat in March.

Radford has a new coach in Mike Jones who was an assistant coach at Georgia and VCU. Coach Jones takes over a Radford team that had a horrible 5-24 record last season and was near the bottom in offense among division 1 teams. Radford has been starting and playing a very small lineup in some games, but I look for 6’9” Tolga Cerrah and 6’9” Lukas Winegarner, both sophomores, to see a fair number of minutes against UK’s front line. 6’8” Johnathan Edwards leads the team in rebounds….R.J. Price leads in assists….and Jareal Smith leads in steals. Unfortunately, there is no sugar coating it….Radford is simply a very weak team and is terribly outmatched by UK’s huge talent advantage.

UK will have been happy to get back home to Rupp arena after a long road trip. The OD game where a senior laden team played a hard nose zone defense and really gave the Cats a tough time in a very physical game should have served as a great lesson for these young Cats…..they now know what it’s going to be like to go up against tough zone defenses, which they will likely face often this season. Teams will often milk the clock….play zone…and get physical in the paint.

The key for the Cats is to continue to improve in every facet of the game….and they definitely need to learn how to be effective against zone defenses. Also, hopefully, UK practices on free throw shooting!

The Radford game should give all the UK players an opportunity to get minutes. I see a total blowout win for the Cats…40 point win or more depending on when Cal goes deep in his bench. GO CATS!

What I Saw at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off!

UKFreak00
WT Senior Board Moderator

The Hall of Fame Tip-Off was two games and what appeared to be two completely different Kentucky teams. But at a closer look, the two games were not that different. Even in a 38 point blowout of Penn State and a hard fought 10 point victory over Old Dominion, there were many common themes. Here is what I saw:

Positives:

• Doron Lamb is a completely different player. He is not just a shooter anymore. He is the only player on this team that is comfortable driving to the gaps in a defense and creating shots for himself and others. The others will get there I am sure, but right now the offense flows through Doron Lamb.

• Better spacing on fast breaks. In the exhibition and Marist games, we were too cluttered and disorganized on fast break opportunities. These last three games have shown much improvement, though. We are filling the lanes and seem more controlled on fast break opportunities.

• Kyle Wiltjer received Calipari’s message. You heard Calipari say Wiltjer needed to earn his minutes by being more physical on the glass and coming up with loose balls. Only two rebounds in the Penn State game in 28 minutes to five rebounds in 11 minutes in the Old Dominion game.

• Interior passing. All of our big men can create for each other. Davis, Jones, and Wiltjer are all very skilled passers for big men. Having big men who can distribute is very important in this offense.

• Anthony Davis’ body control. Davis still has not fully grasped things on the offensive end but I have no reason to think he will not. Everything Davis does is smooth and seems effortless. He is always in control and does not make many mental mistakes. Davis has a very rare skill-set and is going to be a great player when he fully understands the offense.

• Three point shooting. We continue to shoot a good percentage from beyond the arc. 42% over the two games. Three point shooting is very important in the NCAA Tournament. Being able to shoot around the 40% mark is going to be very important for us.

• Defense. The defense over the two days was phenomenal. Holding Penn State and Old Dominion to a combined 36 for 123 from the field. That is 29% from the field!

• Three point defense specifically. The last two years Calipari’s teams have struggled to guard the three early in the season. This team closes out on every open shooter. Outside jump shots do not go uncontested with this team.

• Darius Miller is accepting his role this year. In the first game, we were in control from the opening tip. Miller got his teammates involved, played solid defense, and did all the little things right. Then in the second game, when others around him were struggling offensively, Miller showed leadership by stepping up and scoring a team-high 13 points.

• Shying away from the Dribble Drive. I say this is a positive because of Calipari’s willingness to change his offensive game plan to the strengths of his team. We are running a lot more screens, pick and rolls, etc. this year instead of a true Dribble Drive.

• Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is becoming a vocal leader. If you pay close attention after we score a basket, Kidd-Gilchrist is usually the one yelling out to set up the press. This kid looks like a natural leader on the floor.

• One of my main complaints during the first two years of the John Calipari era has been the inability to attack a zone offensively. However, for a team that has never worked on attacking a zone, they looked pretty good against it vs. Old Dominion. It was a low scoring game, and the offensive production was not where you would expect it to be. However, Lamb, Miller, and Kidd-Gilchrist were all effective at attacking the zone. All three of these guys from the wing flashed to the free throw line and attacked the gaps.

• Unselfishness. It is unbelievable how unselfish all these guys are. When you have roster filled five-star high school players who are used to getting a lot of shots and scoring a lot of points, getting them to play together is always a task. This team has bought into Calipari and they are willing to make an extra pass and give up the bucket to a teammate.

• Kyle Wiltjer has a very polished offensive game. I did not see Wiltjer contributing much on this team, but if he continues to buy into what Calipari is selling and can be more physical and haul in more rebounds then Wiltjer is a match-up nightmare for a lot of teams. He has a nice touch from outside, he can handle the ball, and he is very fundamental on the low block.

• Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is flawless on fast breaks. I understand why Calipari says if Kidd-Gilchrist is ahead of you for a fast break and you do not get him the ball, you are coming out. Kidd-Gilchrist just does not make mistakes on fast breaks. He gives the ball up when he should and he takes it himself when he should. You do not see any “You should have done that instead” moments with Kidd-Gilchrist in the open court.

• Terrence Jones is turning down three point shots. Last season I criticized Jones heavily for his quick trigger from the outside. Even with his ability to shoot from outside, Jones needs to play his game, and take his shots from 15 feet and in. The only three pointers he is shooting are wide open, and he is not forcing them the way he did last season.

• Fighting through adversity. Upsets happen when you let teams like Old Dominion hang around. When Old Dominion cut the lead to one late in the second half, we did not panic, we continued to play our game, and ended up building a comfortable double-digit lead.

Negatives:

• Still settling for too many outside shots to open the game. I am not sure what it is about this team, but we are not the same team early that we are after halftime. Early in games, we are not running the offense and instead settling for outside jump shots.

• Marquis Teague. Many are not worried about him, but I am. Many will point to the turnovers from Knight, Wall, and Bledsoe in their first few games under Calipari, but going by the eye test, I am more worried about Teague than the previous guards. Under Wall and Knight, even with the mistakes they made, the offense clearly ran through them. I do not see that with Teague. The positives are not outweighing the negatives with Teague right now. The offense is just flat out better with Teague on the bench and Lamb running the point.

• Terrence Jones played soft. In typical Terrence Jones form, he showed spurts of being physical but, for the most part, he is not putting his body to good use. The guy is 6’9, 240 pounds of solid muscle and is constantly pushed around by smaller guys.

• Free throws. I am so tired of writing this in the negative section. They are called “Free” for a reason. 63% over the two weekend games is pathetic.

• Rebounding. If we rebound like this against teams that can match our athleticism, we are in trouble. Henson and Zeller will dominate the game December 3rd if we do not fix this. We were only +12 in two games combined in rebounding margin. And this is against Penn State and Old Dominion.

• Laziness. It is not a constant problem, but this team does have a tendency to get lazy at times. For a perfect example of this team getting lazy go to the 4:00 minute mark in the first half of the Penn State game. Vargas is fighting with three Penn State players for a rebound, Wiltjer is giving a pathetic effort, and Miller, Lamb, and Teague are all standing around watching.

Overall I think this was a good learning experience for a young team. Old Dominion is a good basketball team and the game on Sunday is the type of game we are going to see early in the NCAA Tournament. While many are down on this team after the performance against Old Dominion, I am not too worried. I am worried about Teague and the lack of rebounding, but I do not see it being a problem that will not be fixed. The talent is there, we will be okay. Just remember, this is a John Calipari team, and I cannot stress this to fans enough, this is not the same team you are going to see in February and March!

Video: Coach Calipari on 62-52 win over Old Dominion

UK senior Darius Miller came off the bench to score 13 points and lead a young Kentucky team past Old Dominion 62-52 Sunday to win the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic in Connecicut as Kentucky Downs Old Dominion, Claim Hall of Fame Tourney Crown. Calipari said Miller was the only Wildcat who had success penetrating the ODU zone defense. Coach Calipari said, "We're a good team, but we have a long way to go. And if we want to be special, guys have got to start making incremental steps."

Penn St. lost 4 starters and their top 5 scorers from a team that lost to Ohio St. in the Big Ten tourney finals and went to the NCAA losing to Temple. This season the Nittany Lions will be rebuilding with a new coach….Patrick Chambers who at age 39 will be the youngest HC in the Big Ten. Chambers was a former chief assistant coach at Villanova before going to Boston U. as HC for 2 years. Importantly, Chambers, a Philadelphia native, has connections in a recruiting area important to Penn St. Unfortunately for Chambers, he assumes the HC position at Penn St. with a roster mostly lacking in talent and experience. Only junior guard Tim Frazier returns as a starter from last season’s team….Frazier is a capable PG and solid defender. The Nittany Lions backcourt should be helped by returning Sr. Cam Woodyard who has some experience off the bench and freshman Trey Lewis. Returning Soph Billy Oliver has some experience in the frontcourt and redshirt 6’ 9” Serbian Sasa Borovnjak should help on the frontline. Otherwise, the Nittany Lions are hoping that some of the freshmen step up such as 6’8” Ross Travis.

Not much is expected this season from the Nittany Lions in the Big Ten as they are picked to finish last in the conference. Penn St has opened the season with easy victories over Hartford, Radford and Long Island, but the competition will immediately get much tougher as they face #2 Kentucky.

Kentucky is coming off a 75-65 win over #11 Kansas, but coach Cal is clearly not satisfied with the lack of teamwork in the game. The Cats started off a bit nervous and instead of finishing plays and playing as a team, they resorted to too many individual moves and committed a boatload of TO’s in the 1st half…. Teague alone had 6 TO’s in the 1st half.

UK did settle down in 2nd half and played much better opening up a nice lead and held on for a ten point win. The Cats did get some solid performances from Terrence Jones with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist continued his game intensity and contributed 12 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and 4 assists, but did have 5 TO’s. Anthony Davis had 12 points, but was huge on the defensive end with 6 rebounds and 7 blocks while affecting other shots from the field. Doran Lamb performed well before his family in MSG hitting 3-5 from the perimeter and finished with 17 points. Teague did play better in the 2nd half and didn’t commit a single TO.

Despite the nice win over Kansas, the game revealed that these young Cat have much to work on. 1) They must understand that individual talent alone doesn’t win games….talent playing as a team win games. 2) They must value the ball….19 TO’s is far too many. 3) They must work on their FT shooting…..16-29 (55.2%) is unacceptable. 4) They must continue to work on their help defense 5) Most importantly, this team must listen to Cal….trust each other….and execute offensively as a unit looking for the open man.

Frankly, as someone who has watched UK basketball since the Hagan/Ramsey era and I have seen great UK talent and teams….but, I would be hard pressed to find a past UK team with this much overall talent….the 96 team comes the closet. In fact, the talent on this team is scary good and their potential is unbelievable. But to realize that potential and equal the successes of past UK teams, they must put their individual stats secondary to the success of the team as a whole. If this team plays as a well oiled unit….not caring who scores or gets the glory…I see an 8th NCAA championship banner hanging in Rupp Arena after this season!

I see a UK win over Penn St. by 20 points. GO CATS!
