Loyola is a member of the MAAC which includes teams such as Iona, Fairfield, Rider and Niagara. UK fans will remember GG Smith, Tubby’s son who played at Georgia, who is now an assistant coach at Loyola.
Loyola is off to a good start with an 8-2 record with loses only to Wake Forest and St. Bonaventure. The Greyhounds have good balanced scoring and solid experience on the floor with a senior, 2 juniors and 2 sophomores. Dylon Cormier leads the team in scoring and perimeter shooting hitting 14-33 for a very good 42.4%. Robert Olson is the team’s other best 3 point shooter hitting a so so 13-37 for 35.1%. Shane Walker leads the Greyhounds in rebounds and blocks….and Erik Etherly also does a good job on the boards. Assists are spread fairly evenly among several starters.
I look for Loyola to be more competitive than Samford, but the Greyhounds simply don’t match up to UK in talent.
UK played reasonably well against Samford with Lamb having another great shooting game. Lamb is now making slightly over 50% of his perimeter shots which is outstanding. Miller starting in place of Jones had a very good game….and it was great to see Miller getting his perimeter eye back hitting several 3 points shots. Darius was aggressive on the offensive end making several shots in the paint while handing out 5 assists. Teague continues to improve and ran the team well with 5 assists….although he did have a few TO’s toward the end of the game.
It was good to get Wiltjer and Vargus more time on the court. Although Wiltjer struggled on defense and missed some shots, the kid has talent and will improve with more time on the court. He will get stronger and be more comfortable in the 3-4 years he is likely to be at UK. In fact, I think we will see nice improvement from Wiltjer by tourney time. I am particulary pleased with the effort of Vargus on the court…..he has made a significant improvement over last season and does a nice job on the boards when he comes in off the bench.
The game against Loyola will give Cal an additional opportunity to play different combinations and get valuable game time from some of his subs. UK should defeat Loyola by 25 points. GO CATS!
