Samford, another Southern Conference team like Chattanooga, enters Rupp arena with a 3-6 record. The Bulldogs have balanced scoring with Drew Windler the lead scorer at 11.7…..Windler is a solid perimeter shooter hitting 16-37 for 43.2%. However, senior Jeffery Merritt is the teams best long range shooter hitting 17-34 for a red hot 50%……. Merritt also leads the team in assists along with Devin McNeil. Although, Windler is the Bulldog center at 6’9”….the team is led in rebounds by 6’4” Will Cook and 6’6” Merritt who is Samford’s best all around best player.
Samford is a young team starting 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores along with one senior. The Bulldogs have lost 6 games, but they have been very competitive in all but one loss.
Unfortunately, Samford lacks the talent and are too inexperienced to stay close to Kentucky.
UK achieved a lopsided win over Chattanooga, but coach Cal was far from satisfied with the overall play of the Cats……especially their toughness. Certainly, several players had good games…..namely, Davis, Kidd-Gilchrist and Lamb. UK shot too many perimeter shots….especially Teague who was 1-5. There is no reason for Teague, who is not a good perimeter shooter, to be taking 5 shots from the outside. However, Teague did do a nice job running the team with few mistakes. Miller is still struggling from the outside hitting only 2-7 and is shooting a dismal 24% from the perimeter….. UK needs Miller to regain his outside shooting touch ASAP. Jones injured a finger and was a non factor in the game. Cat fans can only hope that Jones is able to return to the floor soon and regains his great play.
The game against the Bulldogs should be an easy one and hopefully provide the team the ability to improve their offensive and defensive execution. I see another 25 plus win for the UK. GO CATS!
