News and Notes: Thursday Edition

On Saturday, New Year's Eve, Bill Courtney makes his first appearance as a Division I head coach at his alma mater, Bucknell when the Cornell Big Red come marching into Lewisberg. Below, some news and notes for Thursday...
  • StatSheet.com provides letter grades for Cornell's individual performances last night. Chris Wroblewski's "B+" grade was the team's highest. Last night's game was covered as part of Mid-Majority.com's 800 games Project.
  • Also in action yesterday were some of Cornell's committed recruits. As noted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Nolan Cressler (Plum HS) Plum, PA, 6-4, G (class of 2012) finished with 29 points for Plum (6-2) in a 60-46 victory against Class AAA No. 3 Hampton (6-3) in the championship of the Hampton Tournament. In reviewing the last year of Plum's local sports scene, YourPlum.com writes, "Big year for Cressler. Plum senior Nolan Cressler begins 2011 on a scoring tear, as he averages almost 27 points per game as a key cog in the Mustangs varsity boys basketball machine. The young and talented Plum squad — with only one senior on the roster — earns a crucial senior-night victory over Franklin Regional that puts it in the WPIAL Quad-A playoffs. Cressler earns all-star honors for his efforts. In August, as he gets set for his senior year at Plum, Cressler gives a verbal commitment to play basketball and continue his education at Cornell University in the Ivy League. He solidifies his commitment to the Division I program in November by signing a National Letter of Intent. Cressler picks up where he left off last season, as he scores 22 and 29 points, respectively, in Plum's season-opening victories over Valley and Highlands. On Dec. 13 against Kiski Area, Cressler scores his 1,000th varsity point in the first quarter of a 52-47 loss." In other action, ESPN Dallas is covering the Whataburger Tournament in Haltom City, Texas. Holt Harmon (Plano West HS), Plano, TX, 6-9, F finished with 19 points in an 80-70 win over Fort Worth Arlington Heights in the opening round. Plano West moves on to face Desoto today at 12:30. See the Dallas Morning News. And Braxston Bunce (Kelowna Secondary School) Kelowna, BC, Canada, 6-11 was in action as well and finished with 11 points as Kelowna defeated Bremerton of Washington in the opening round of the Capital Tournament in Olimpia, Washington. Bunce also recorded eight rebounds and seven blocks.

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of December 29 is No. 245 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 182 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 229. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
