ITHACA -- The Cornell men's basketball team will get a nonconference test Sunday afternoon when it hosts American at 3 p.m. at Newman Arena.

The Big Red (2-3) is hoping its trend of alternating wins and losses continues, at least on Sunday. Cornell opened with a loss at St. Bonaventure and has gone win-loss-win-loss since then, with both of its victories -- against Binghamton and Boston--at home. The Red is coming off a 72-64 loss Tuesday night at Delaware; its other loss came at Buffalo on Nov. 16.

Cornell senior point guard Chris Wroblewski is averaging 7.4 points, 6.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game and runs an offense that has three players averaging double figures. Classmate Drew Ferry is scoring 12.6 points per game, followed by junior forward Eitan Chemerinski (11.4 ppg.) and two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week Shonn Miller (10.4 ppg.).

On Tuesday night, Delaware scored 11 consecutive points after Cornell took a lead in the final four minutes and went on to an eight-point win. Ferry had 16 points and four rebounds to lead the Big Red, while freshman Galal Cancer (13 points) and junior Eitan Chemerinski (12 points) were also in double figures.

American (3-2), out of the Patriot League, is coming off a 74-73 victory against Quinnipiac and is led by senior forward Charles Hinkle (24.8 ppg.). Hinkle leads the Patriot League in scoring and has scored at least 20 points in all five of American's games this season.

Sunday's game will be the first between Cornell and American. The Eagles are coached by former Virginia player and coach Jeff Jones, who is in his 12th season at the Washington, D.C. school.

The Big Red has enjoyed great success at Newman Arena in the recent past, including its two wins so far in '11-12. Cornell is 49-9 in its past 58 home games, and 43-8 over the past five years in front of its home fans.
