News and Notes: Turkey Thursday Edition

Below, some news and notes for Thanksgiving Thursday...
  • Bucknell is hosting a sub-regional round of the Legends Classic which will include Princeton in the field. The Bucknell game notes indicate, "Bucknell is 41-44 (.482) all-time against the Ivy League. The Bison have played 46 games against Cornell, but only 39 combined against the other seven Ivy teams... [Bucknell all-time is] 23-23 ... against Cornell."

In the not-so-distant future, Ivy League teams will have to find a way to deal with incoming Cornell recruit, Braxston Bunce, a mobile center measuring 6'11" and 265 pounds.

"Leading a deep and talented group are two of the province's blue-chip senior talents in 6-foot-11 post Braxton Bunce and point guard Mitch Goodwin. Bunce missed his entire Grade 10 year with two knee surgeries and was not at his best all of last season. But [head coach Harry] Parmar has seen a new level of determination in his big man, who is expected to not only dominate in the paint, but in the classroom where his 4.0 grade point average has led to a verbal commitment to play in the Ivy League next season at NCAA Division 1 Cornell. 'Last year he was just getting his mojo back,' Parmar says. 'I think he's going to be twice the player he was. He's going to be assertive. He's going to be a bear. He's going to be that aircraft carrier that you need to carry the load.' If Bunce is the aircraft carrier, then Goodwin will be the guy with the goggles and scarf, giving the thumbs up sign for takeoff... Add to the front end of the rotation a trio of Grade 11s in Saskatchewan-transfer guard John Katerburg, as well as blue-collar 6-foot-3 Buzz Truss and still-growing, 6-foot-5 forward Darrion Bunce."

  • In alumni news, Louis Dale ('10) is out for the season with a ligament injury per an announcement from his club, Goettingen of Germany's premier league, the Budesliga (BBK). Dale was averaging 11.9 points, 2.2 assists and 2.0 rebounds per game in BBK league action. He notched 15 points on November 22 in a EuroChallenge game against Besiktas of Turkey, which was led by an incredible 50 point performance from NBA All-Star, Deron Williams. • Former guard in Steve Donahue's program at Cornell, Alex Hill, is featured on NorthpoleHoops.com. Hill played one season for Cornell during 2008-2009 before returning home to Canada and transferring to the University of Toronto. The site writes:

"Hill refers to his time at Cornell as being 'everything that I could have hoped for academically and socially', but acknowledges that it wasn't easy watching his team clinch its second consecutive Ivy League title and earn a national championship berth while primarily glued to the bench. 'I went to Cornell to play basketball and, even though I loved it there, I wasn't happy with my playing time and sitting on the bench wasn't enough for me,' admits Hill. During the 2008-09 season, the 6'5" swingman got into just 12 of 31 regular season games for the Big Red (scoring 32 points over just 46 minutes played all season) and played merely one minute of garbage time in Cornell's first round exit to Missouri in the March Madness tournament. Even though Hill took plenty from his first year at Cornell, basketball was his passion, a passion he was still determined to pursue. While the decision to leave the Ithaca, N.Y. school was difficult, the choice of where to go next was an easy one."

  • Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of November 24 is No. 318 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 166 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 228. Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
