NEWARK, Del. -- Delaware scored 11 straight points after Cornell took a lead in the final four minutes of the contest and went on to a [72-64] victory over the Big Red on Tuesday evening at Acierno Arena. Cornell slipped to 2-3 on the year, while the Blue hens won their home opener to improve to 1-2.

Senior Drew Ferry had 16 points and four rebounds to lead the Big Red, while freshman Galal Cancer (13 points) and junior Eitan Chemerinski (12 points) were also in double figures, Freshman Shonn Miller chipped in with eight points, a career-high 10 rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals in the loss. The Big Red shot just 38 percent from the floor overall and 26 percent from 3-point range.

Devon Saddler scored 21 points and added six rebounds and five assists to lead the Blue Hens, with Jamelle Hagins (13 points, eight rebounds) and Kyle Anderson (11 points) also reaching double figures. Delaware held a decisive 47-31 edge on the backboards and hit on 55 percent of its field goals after halftime to hold on for the win.

The Big Red got on the board first with a Ferry 3-pointer, but consecutive treys by Delaware gave the Blue Hens a 6-5 edge a minute and a half in. A Chemerinski up-and-under basket cut a 10-5 Big Red deficit to 10-7, and after the junior stole a pass into the post, Wroblewski found the big man on the break and drew a foul. Chemerinski made both to get back within one, and after a Ferry steal, Cancer drew another foul on the break and tied it up with the first of his two shots from the charity stripe.

Threatt hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and after a Big Red turnover, Kelvin McNeil got a leak-out and was fouled on the layup to put the home team up 17-12 at the second media timeout. A scramble after consecutive tipped Delaware passes landed in the hands of Kyle Anderson, who stroked a 3-pointer ot give Delaware a double figure lead at 24-14 with 7:39 to play. That forced a Big Red timeout.

Undaunted, the Big Red went on a 10-2 run to get back within a basket, with Wroblewski assisting on three baskets during the run, including finding Shonn Miller in thje corner for a jumper to make it 26-24 with four minutes to play in the half. Cancer tied the score after the media timeouts with a driving layup, but Josh Brinkley answered right back with a 15-footer on the next possession to give the Blue Hens a 28-26 lead. Cornell missed four 3-pointers in succession while running good offense, but continued to play its strong defense. After getting a stop on Delaware's final possession, the Big Red played for the last shot and got a great one, but Miles Asafo-Adjei's layup rimmed out to give the visitors a two-point lead at the break.

Cornell shot just 35 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, including 2-of-12 from beyond the arc, but still got 10 from Ferry and eight from Chemerinski, who played just seven minutes with foul trouble. Miller had four rebounds, two blocks and two steals before the break. The Big Red's defense kept the team in it, allowing Delaware to shoot just 38 percent and connect on 29 percent from 3-point range (4-of-14). Cornell's defense forced 11 turnovers to help overcome a 26-16 Delaware edge on the backboards.

Cornell regained leads early in the second half on a driving layup by Miles Asafo-Adjei and a wide-open 3-pointer by Miller in the first two minutes of the half. Saddler answered with a jumper and eventually took the lead back to eight (50-42), but Cornell kept clawing back in. The Big Red, trailing by five at 57-52, scored six straight to take the lead back on a Ferry 3-pointer with less than four minutes to play. Ferry then missed a 3-pointer on Cornell's next possession, followed by a Cancer miss on the front end of a 1-and-1 that would have kept the momentum at home.

The Blue Hens eventually regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Hagins after an offensive rebound, and after Wroblewski missed a jumper, Anderson buried a 3-pointer from the corner with just over a minute to play to send the home crowd out of its seats. A quick miss by Cancer led to a rebound from Saddler, who was fouled and cashed in at the charity stripe. Up six, Delaware sealed the game in the final minute from the free-throw line.

The Big Red will return home from Thanksgiving Break with a matchup against American on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 3 p.m. at Newman Arena in Bartels Hall. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.


NEWARK -- A foot injury might have kept Kyle Anderson out of the season opener, but it wasn't going to prevent the University of Delaware freshman from debuting in front of his new home crowd.

Anderson hit a big three-pointer late, and Jamelle Hagins hit a pair of clutch go-ahead free throws with under two minutes remaining to lead Delaware over Cornell 72-64 for the Hens' first win of the season.

"You always want to come out big first game and show the fans what they have to look forward to the whole season," Anderson said.

Anderson (11 points) played 33 minutes. He missed the first game at Radford with a contusion in his right foot.

He played 20 minutes in Friday night's loss at Villanova, hitting four 3-pointers for 12 points.

It took three games for his first career collegiate win, but it seemed like longer.

"Finally, it's about time," Anderson said. "Radford was disappointing not being able to play and we really thought we could beat Villanova. I wish we could play them again. This feels great, now we just got to keep it rolling."

Delaware held a six-point lead with 5:54 remaining; however, the Hens let it slip away as Cornell's Drew Ferry sank a three to put the Big Red on top 58-57 with 3:39 left.

Hagins was fouled going for a rebound as the clock crept to 1:56. It sent him to the line, where he had missed on two separate trips a few minutes earlier.

He made no such mistake this time around.

"I was kind of mad at myself for missing the front ends of the two free throws I had earlier, so I had to hit those," he said.

Chris Wroblewski then missed a 3-pointer at the other end for Cornell. Hagins grabbed the rebound and quickly moved it to Devon Saddler.

Saddler let some time run off the clock before driving down the lane. He kicked out to an open Anderson in the corner in front of the Delaware bench. Anderson drained a three to put the Hens up four.

"Kyle is a heck of shooter," head coach Monte Ross said. "He is a heck of a player for us. He has ice water running through his veins so he wants to be in positions like that.

Delaware would hit its free throws the rest of the way to extend its lead.

Saddler led all scorers with 21 points and Hagins chipped in with 13.

Cornell only hit one field goal in the final 3:39, and it came on a layup with five seconds left.

"As long as we continue to play defense like that, I think we'll have a chance all season long," Ross said.

NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team used a late 11-0 run to erase a one-point deficit and went on to defeat Cornell, 72-64, Tuesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center in the Blue Hens’ 2011-12 home opener.

Delaware, which improved to 1-2 on the season and won its home opener for the second straight year, trailed 58-57 with 3:39 remaining when Big Red guard Drew Ferry connected on hit fourth three-pointer of the night.

However two free throws by Jamelle Hagins put the Blue Hens in front for good with 1:56 to play, and following a miss by Cornell’s Chris Wroblewski, Devon Saddler found Kyle Anderson for a three-pointer from the right corner to make it a 62-58 game with 1:23 left.

After Cornell guard Galal Cancer misfired from long distance, Saddler was fouled and drained two free throws to put Delaware up six with 1:06 on the clock. Saddler and Hagins then each went 2 of 2 from the charity stripe, closing the 11-0 run and increasing the margin to 68-58 with 38 seconds left. The Big Red scored six points the rest of the way, but Khalid Lewis and Saddler each hit a pair of foul shots for the Blue Hens to put the game away.

Saddler (at right) led Delaware in scoring for the third consecutive game with 21 points to go with six rebounds and a game-high five assists, while Hagins (at left) was a force inside with 13 points and a team-best eight boards. Anderson, making his first career start, reached double figures for the second straight game with 11 points, while Josh Brinkley had his best game of the young season by contributing seven rebounds and six points.

Cornell, which dropped to 2-3 on the season, got a team-best 16 points from Ferry, who went 4 of 9 from behind the arc. Cancer chipped in 13 points for the Big Red, while Eitan Chemerinski had 12 points. Shonn Miller narrowly missed a double-double as he finished with eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

“It’s a steady progress for our team,” said sixth-year Delaware head coach Monté Ross. “We will be better a month from now, and even better a month after that. As long as this team continues to work hard, we’ll be fine. Devon is just a very good player and he’s not afraid to make the extra pass. He did that tonight, and Kyle knocked down a big shot for us.”

The game remained tight through the opening eight minutes before Delaware used a 12-2 spurt to go up 24-14 on an Anderson three-pointer at the 7:42 mark of the opening half. However the Big Red quickly answered with a 12-2 run of its own, tying the game at 26-26 at the 3:12 mark on a driving layup by Cancer. Brinkley responded with a foul line jumper on the Blue Hens’ next possession, and after both teams went scoreless the rest of the way, Delaware took a slim 28-26 margin into the break.

The Blue Hens led by just a point at 36-35 following another layup by Cancer but a 9-2 UD spurt, capped by a Saddler three-pointer, extended the advantage to 45-37 with 12:44 to play. Delaware again went up eight at 50-42 on a Lewis jumper at the 8:39 mark, and it was still a five-point lead when Hagins hit a free throw with 5:01 to play.

However Wroblewski hit two free throws for Cornell, and after one by Miller, Ferry connected from long distance to give the Big Red a 58-57 advantage with 3:39 to play. But Delaware immediately responded with the decisive 11-0 run to put the game out of reach.

The Blue Hens held a commanding 47-31 rebounding advantage, shot a season-high 44.4 percent from the field, and went 18 of 26 from the foul line, including a 14 of 14 performance in the final two minutes.

Delaware remains home on Saturday to host Lafayette at the Bob Carpenter Center at 2 p.m.

Delaware outscored the Big Red 44-38 and outrebounded them 21-15 in the second half.

Cornell (2-3) scored 21 points off 17 Delaware turnovers, but shot just 37.5 percent (24 of 64).

Hagins finished with 13 points for the Blue Hens, who were 12 of 22 from the field in the second half (54.5 percent).

Ferry led the Big Red with 16 points, going 4 of 9 from 3-point range.
