Below, some news and notes for Monday...- SB Nation of Boston writes, "With games against Cornell and Columbia left on the schedule, Harvard will now have to win both of these games and have Penn drop one of Brown, Princeton or Yale in order to claim their first NCAA Tourney birth since 1946."
- Cody Toppert (Cornell '05) signed last week with Logitravel Mallorca of Spain's LEB Gold (2nd Division). He played part of the season with Ourense of the LEB Silver (3rd Division).
- Jeff Foote (Cornell '10) finished with 4 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block shot in the NBA D-League All Star Game on Saturday. Nets Daily writes, "The [D League All Star] game was close because of [JamesOn] Curry's clutch second half shooting and two steals by Jeff Foote in the last 10 seconds." Foote's Springfield Armor are not back in action until March 2 at Maine. All D-League games are broadcast online via Futurecast on the league website.
- Several NBA teams are giving long hard looks as Foote as possible midseason call-up. Nets Daily writes that Foote is "seen as the most likely of the three [Springfield Armor D-League All Stars] to be called up by the Nets. The 24-year-old seven footer has improved dramatically this season and Armor coach Bob MacKinnon has been lobbying for him."
- Celtics Town writes, "Jeff Clark [of the Celtics Blog] mentions the possibility of adding Jeff Foote, who starred at Cornell during college and recently made the D-League All-Star team for the Springfield Armor. But the problem with Foote is the same problem with a lot of D-League big men — he’s flawed, and he’s flawed in ways Rivers would never overlook. Foote is a reasonably skilled seven footer with soft touch. He has skills around the hoop and range that extends outside the paint. But he would get shoved around defensively and doesn’t have the athleticism to make up for his lack of power. He’s not a physical presence like the Celtics need. As Rivers said, if there’s a big man out there, there’s a reason he’s out there."

Foote could be on Celtics radarORLANDO, Fla. — The Boston Celtics are very much in the market for adding a big man, and may not have to go too far to find one -- 90 miles, actually.
Free agency and trades are options, but the C's haven't ruled out dipping into the D-League, either.
One of the top D-League centers is Jeff Foote, who plays for the Springfield Armor.
Foote had four points and seven rebounds in the D-League all-star game this weekend, told CSNNE.com that he's well aware that the Celtics are in the market for some help in the frontcourt. With the Armor, he's averaging 15 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots per game.
But the C's may have some competition for the 7-foot, 265-pound Cornell graduate.
Foote has been getting some feelers from the New Jersey Nets, one of the Armor's NBA affiliate teams. He was supposed to have a workout with the Milwaukee Bucks, but he said it had to be canceled because it conflicted with a D-League game.
Needless to say, the 24-year-old feels good about his chances of being in the NBA soon.
"It's one of those situations where I feel I'm right there," Foote said. "I'll just keep plugging away."
Foote adds that while getting to the NBA is his goal, he's more focused on improving his overall play.
One scout who has watched him dating back to his days at Cornell, said he has improved his game in most areas.
"The big thing with him, is he's a smart player," the scout said. "I know, big surprise from a Cornell kid. But he just has a good feel for how to play, how to fit into whatever system. He's not a starting NBA center or even a backup right now. But if you need a No. 3, he might be able to help you."
Said Foote: "I've always assumed the better I play, somebody will take a shot on me. It's (playing in the NBA) is definitely a goal, but right now, I'm in the Development League trying to develop my game."

- Committed Cornell recruit Holt Harmon and his Plano West Wolves were bounced out of the Texas 5A playoffs 2nd round with a defeat to South Grand Prairie on Saturday at American Airlines Arena in Dallas.
- Committed Cornell recruit Nolan Cressler and his Plum Mustangs were knocked out of the WPIAL 2nd round playoffs with a defeat to Shaler in western Pennsylvania. Recapping the game, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette writes:
Plum High School's Nolan Cressler was showing off his Division I college talent, putting the team on his shoulders and bringing the Mustangs back from a 12-point third-quarter deficit. It took two future Division I athletes to trump him. Shaler's Geno Thorpe and J.P. Holtz made every big play down the stretch to help the Titans push past Plum, 57-48, in a WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinal Saturday at North Allegheny. Thorpe, a junior guard and a Penn State recruit, and Holtz, a senior center and a Pitt football recruit, scored 19 of Shaler's 22 points in the fourth quarter to stave off Plum's comeback. Thorpe finished with 24 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Holtz scored eight of his 13 points in the final quarter. They helped Shaler (22-2) reach the WPIAL semifinals for only the third time in school history... Cressler, a senior who is headed to Cornell of the Ivy League, finished with 28 points, making 10 of 16 shots from the field and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line. He was the second-leading scorer in the WPIAL in the regular season at 25.7 ppg, but he had only eight points in the first half. He sat for the final 4:21 of the half after picking up his third foul... "Cressler gave us all we could handle," said Thorpe...

Nolan Cressler, though, was magnificent, The 6-4 Cornell recruit virtually carried Plum in the fourth, scoring 13 of his game-high 28 points in the final frame -- 20 in the second half -- as the Mustangs whittled a 32-20, third-quarter deficit to 43-41 with 3:51 left in the fourth. Cressler played the final minute with four fouls... If this was Cressler's last game, it was a memorable one. His school-record career point total stands at 1,565. He also had 28 in the first game against Shaler. "It doesn't take a genius to figure out we're going to sink or swim (with Cressler)," [Plum coach Ron] Richards said. "I'm taking my chances swimming with him." Cressler scored the game's first and last points for Plum.

- Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 27 is No. 173 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 207 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 204 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.

- Throughout the year we provide periodic updates on Cornell's alumni playing professionally. Below, some updates:
-Jeff Aubry ('99) (Halcones Rojos, LNBP Mexico premier league/Arecibo Capitanes, BSN Puerto Rico premier league)-As of February 27, Aubry averaged 5.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game as Halcones captured the Mexican league championship. Halcones finished the the regular season 34-6 and in 1st place out of 14 teams in the Mexican LNBP. Aubry, a 6'11" center, splits his time in both the Mexican and Puerto Rican professional leagues. He is also a member of Puerto Rico's national team joining several NBA stars. A well traveled pro player, Aubry spent several seasons in the NBA D League in the early part of his career with the Fayetteville Patriots and Florida Flame and earned honorable mention all D-League in 2002. During his more than a decade of pro experience, Aubry has also played professionally in the ABA (Miami Tropics) and abroad in Puerto Rico (Arecibo, Leones de Ponce, and Santurce, BSN Puerto Rico), Spain (Tarragona, LEB Gold Spain 2nd Division), Mexico (Halcones Rojos and Chihuahua Dorados, LNBP Mexico premier league), Poland (Slask Wroclaw, PLK Poland premier league), Argentina (Libertad Sunchales, Liga A Argentina), Uruguay (Hebraica, LUB Uruguay )and Peru (Alas Peruanas, Peru).-Cody Toppert ('05) (Logitravel Mallorca, LEB Gold Spain 2nd Division)-As of February 27, Toppert is signed with Mallorca and scored 2 points in his first game with the team on February 24. Prior to joining Mallorca, he averaged 6.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game during 2011-2012 for Ourense in the Spanish LEB Silver (3rd Division). During his pro career, Toppert, a 6'4" wing forward, has played in Spain (Ourense, LEB Silver Spain 3rd Division), England (Plymouth Raiders, British Basketball League), Italy (Forli, LegaDue Italy 2nd division), the CBA (Great Falls Explorers), as well as in Portugal (Barriernese, LCB Portugal premier league), Bulgaria (BC CSKA Sofia, NBL Bulgaria premier league), Germany (Goettingen/Scholz Weissenhorn, BBK Bundesliga Germany premier league) and New Zealand (Taranaki Mountain Airs, NBL New Zealand premier league).-Jason Hartford ('08) (Unsigned free agent)-As of February 27, Hartford is unsigned for the 2011-2012 season. He was cut during the week of October 17 by Cader Rocha, LUB Uruguay premier league and is now a free agent. He was averaging 12.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, second on the team in both categories. The 6'9" Hartford previously played professionally in Portugal (Ginasio, LCB Portugal premier league), Finland (Huima, Korisliiga Finland premier league) and Mozambique (Maxaquene, D1 Mozambique premier league).-Louis Dale ('10) (Goettingen, BBK Bundesliga Germany premier league)-As of February 27, Dale is out for the season with a torn ACL. He was averaging 11.9 points, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 rebounds per game before the injury. Dale is in his second professional season, both seasons in Germany with Goettingen.-Ryan Wittman ('10) (Unsigned free agent)-As of February 27, Wittman is unsigned for the 2011-2012 season after he terminated his contract on September 26 with Zastal of the PLK Poland premier league. He played the 2010-2011 season in Italy (Forli, LegaDue Italy 2nd division) and in the United States (Fort Wayne Mad Ants, NBA D-League).-Jeff Foote ('10) (Springfield Armor, NBA D-League)-As of February 27, Foote is averaging 15.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 56% from the floor in the D-League. He participated in the Portland Trailblazers' 2011-2012 training camp and was an NBA D-League 2011-2012 All Star. Springfield is 21-13 (2nd place out of 8 teams in the Eastern Conference). He played the 2011-2012 preseason with with Zastal of the PLK Poland premier league and the full 2010-2011 season in Spain (Melilla, LEB Gold Spain 2nd division) while on loan from Euro League powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel.-Adam Wire ('11) (Unsigned free agent)-As of February 27, Wire is an unsigned free agent. He was waived by Vaerlose, Denmark BBK premier league during December. He was averaging 11.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 1.9 assists per game. On November 4, 2011 he was named the Eurobasket Player of the Week for Denmark. The 2011-2012 season is his rookie year.
-Aaron Osgood ('11) (Unsigned free agent)-As of February 27, Osgood is an unsigned free agent. He was waived by Vaerlose, Denmark BBK premier league during December. He was averaging 11.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. The 2011-2012 season is his rookie year.
