SUPER BOWL 2012

Below, some news and notes for Wednesday...

• WhatIfSports.com and CollegeHoops.net have partnered up to create Cinderella Madness 2012. This college basketball simulation tournament features 16 of "the most memorable Cinderella stories" from the past eight seasons with teams outside the Big Six conferences, seeded 7th or lower that advanced to the Sweet 16 or beyond. Cornell's 2010 Sweet Sixteen team was seeded as a No. 7 seed in the fantasy simulation and fell in the simulation's first round in an upset to Nevada's 2004 team.
  

• Cornell's game on Saturday evening in Ithaca against Harvard will be carried on ESPN3. Cornell's graduating seniors-- Chris Wroblewski, Max Groebe, Anthony Gatlin and Andrew Ferry will be honored during the weekend. Next season, rising sophomore Shonn Miller and red-shirt junior Errick Peck are expected to emerge. As a sophomore during 2010-2011, Peck averaged 11.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game in Ivy League play while shooting 44% from the floor and 38% beyond the arc.
  

• The Harvard Crimson writes, "This was supposed to be the year; on paper, one of the best Ivy League teams in conference history. There was even talk of [Harvard] making a Cornell-like run in the NCAA tournament—which Harvard hasn’t been to since 1946. But now, at the hands of an undersized point guard from New Jersey [Penn's Zack Rosen], there’s a chance the Crimson won’t even be dancing in March, let alone making a run to the Sweet Sixteen."
  

• The Daily Pennsylvanian writes, "For the entire Ivy season, the Quakers avg. point differential is 6.8, aided by three double-digit wins in the first five games (Cornell, Princeton and Brown). "

• Jeff Foote (Cornell '10), an NBA D-League All Star and his Springfield Armor are back in action on March 2 at Maine. All D-League games are broadcast online via Futurecast on the league website. Nets Daily, an ESPN affiliate site, reviews the D-League All Star game and notes, "Along with [Dennis] Horner, center Jeff Foote and guard JamesOn Curry and Jerry Smith have also been talked about as top prospects... Foote had a team-high seven rebounds [for the East All Stars]."

• Cornell RPI Watch: The RPI (Rating Percentage Index) is a measure of strength of schedule and how a team does against that schedule. It does not consider the margin of victory, but only whether or not a team won and where the game was played (home/away/neutral court). The formula is 25% team winning percentage (WP), 50% opponents' average winning percentage (OWP), and 25% opponents' opponents' average winning percentage (OOWP). (See: CollegeRPI.com for a further explanation of the formula.) The RPI may be the most influential factor in NCAA Tournament seeding. Cornell's RPI rank as of February 29 is No. 174 out of 344 total Division I teams. While neither the Ken Pomeroy or Jeff Sagarin rankings are used by the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee, the KenPom.com site ranks Cornell No. 207 in the nation, while the USA Today Sagarin rankings have Cornell at No. 204 Both sites are predominantly used by fans and the media.
